178. Double-crossed matchsticks

Easy Medium Hard Extreme


The challenge in this puzzle is to end with 4 sets of "double-crossed" matchsticks.

Place 12 matchsticks in a row as shown in figure 1. As an example, take stick number 2, jump over 3, 4, 5 and "single-cross" stick number 6. Take stick number 10, jump over 9, 8, 7 and "double-cross" stick number 6. The "double-cross" has now been completed as shown in figure 2. Continue until you have 4 "double-crosses".

The following rules apply:
1. You may move left OR right.
2. Each move consists of "jumping" over 3 sticks.
3. An already formed "double-cross" would count as 3 sticks, a "single-cross" as 2 sticks and an "uncrossed" stick as 1 when jumped over.
