The challenge in this puzzle is to end with 4 crosses. A cross is formed by picking up a stick, going clockwise or anti-clockwise, jumping over 2 sticks and crossing the 3rd stick. When jumping over a pair of crossed sticks it counts as 2 sticks.
There are many solutions, but one solution is:
Put 4 on 7 (clockwise)
Put 6 on 2 (anti-clockwise)
Put 5 on 8 (clockwise)
Put 3 on 1 (anti-clockwise)
Put 4 on 7 (clockwise)
Put 6 on 2 (anti-clockwise)
Put 5 on 8 (clockwise)
Put 3 on 1 (anti-clockwise)
