In this puzzle you need to have a knowledge of the movement of knights on a chess board.
The 2 matchsticks with heads are the BLACK knights and the 2 matchsticks without heads are the WHITE knights. How can the black knights swop places with the white knights if they are only allowed to move according to the rules of chess? (Knights move like the letter L in chess)
The central square (position 5) can never be reached by any of the knights. So, start with any knight and move in either direction. All the other knight follow the same direction and in sequence. One solution is:
1 to 6, 3 to 8, 9 to 4, 7 to 2, 8 to 1, 6 to 7, 4 to 3, 2 to 9, 1 to 6, 7 to 2, 3 to 8, 9 to 4, 6 to 7, 2 to 9, 8 to 1 and 4 to 3.
