217. Rearrange 24 matchsticks

Easy Medium Hard Extreme


24 sticks are used to form 5 squares of size 1X1 and 1 square of size 2X2 in the figure above.

How would you rearrange the 24 sticks to form 8 squares of size 1X1 and 2 squares of size 2X2. Use the above layout as a clue.

    Make a 2 by 3 rectangle, made of 1x1 squares. Then make a 2x1 rectangle separately also out of 1x1 squares. There is your solution.
